Abstract

The Oxya chinensis grasshopper is one of the insect pests of bean plants. One environmentally friendly alternative for controlling insect pests is using botanical pesticides. Plants with potential as botanical pesticides are jackfruit leaves and red galangal. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a combination of jackfruit leaf extract and red galangal on the mortality and feeding activity of the Oxya chinensis grasshopper pest. This type of research is a quantitative experiment with 5 concentration treatments and 4 repetitions. The parameters observed were the number of grasshopper deaths and the amount of leaf area consumed by grasshoppers in 24 hours. Data analysis used the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney test. The results showed a significant effect on grasshopper mortality (p = 0.014), especially at a concentration of 40%. The Mann-Whitney test further showed that all treatments were significantly different from the control, but not different between treatments. In contrast, feeding activity did not show a significant difference between treatments (p = 0.092). It was concluded that the combination of jackfruit leaf extract and red galangal was effective in increasing the mortality of Oxya chinensis grasshoppers in 24 hours at a concentration of 40%, but had no significant effect on their feeding activity.
